HAZARDOUS WASTE SURVIVAL GUIDE
Specific Waste Reduction Practices

Introduction

In addition to the general business strategies introduced in the previous chapter (marketing, accounting, recordkeeping, personnel policies), many specific procedures can be implemented in your daily operation and maintenance to increase efficiency in the use of hazardous materials and significantly reduce hazardous waste generation.

This chapter makes some specific waste reduction suggestions, and is divided into two parts:

  1. Good Housekeeping and Operating Practices
(Procedures which generally apply to all industries.)

  2. Industry-specific Practices
(Waste reduction for specific industrial processes.)

Many of the measures suggested demonstrate that waste reduction does not have to be expensive or "high-tech." Companies can make major strides in reducing waste by implementing simple improvements. At the very least, these suggestions serve to heighten awareness of the many opportunities available to reduce waste generation and can be a starting point for your own ideas.
