HAZARDOUS WASTE
SURVIVAL GUIDE
Appendix B: Trade Associations as a Resource
Trade associations can be of great assistance in keeping small businesses up to date on issues that concern their industry. In the areas of environmental compliance and waste management, particularly, trade associations can assist members by providing related services, such as:
- Tracking environmental legislation and providing updates on new requirements
- Maintaining information about available waste management technology, products, and services and tracking new developments
- Educating members on methods/technologies to reduce the use of hazardous materials and generation of hazardous waste
- Lobbying local, state, and federal representatives to influence legislation which affects their industry
- Working with local agencies and programs to address industry-specific concerns or needs
- Providing model examples of forms/plans/reports required for regulatory compliance and offering assistance in appropriately completing them
- Performing site visits/environmental audits of individual businesses
- Networking members and negotiating with service companies for improved waste management services and/or reduced rates
Several local trade associations which are already very active in educating members regarding environmental compliance and waste management issues include the Automotive Service Council (ASC), Printing Industries of Northern California (PINC), and Northern California Association of Metal Finishers, Inc. (NCAMF).
Even if such services are not formally provided, an association provides a forum where members can interact to share information, ideas, and concerns. If your association is not providing compliance and waste management related services, let them know that such services are needed and would be an asset to membership in the organization.
