HAZARDOUS WASTE SURVIVAL GUIDE
Profile of a Progressive Trade Association: PINC

The Printing Industries of Northern California (PINC) proactively educates members in environmental compliance and waste management. The association has a full-time environmental specialist on staff who has developed environmental compliance manuals specifically for the printing industry that not only outline regulatory requirements, but also provide a complete environmental compliance system with forms, examples, and instructions.

Additionally, PINC's environmental specialist, who once ran his own print shop and thoroughly understands printing processes, also conducts site visits to member shops. During visits, the specialist tours the shop, makes specific recommendations, and explains how to use the compliance "system." The result of this "team" effort is improved environmental compliance and workplace safety, and reduced waste generation and costs.

PINC has visited more than 650 shops in Northern California over the past 4 years, and continues to visit several shops per week. PINC also makes related presentations to the numerous printers craftsmen's clubs in the state.

In addition to member education, PINC cooperates with local agencies in their outreach and assistance efforts. Examples include PINC's participation with the Santa Clara County Hazardous Materials Advisory Committee, and assistance to the City of San Francisco in developing a pilot "milk-run" operation for collecting hazardous printing wastes from small quantity generators.

PINC's proactive approach on all fronts makes it a model example of how trade associations can play a key role in our efforts to successfully balance the needs of both industry and environment!
