HAZARDOUS WASTE
SURVIVAL GUIDE
Appendix E: Finding it in the Yellow Pages
It is not always obvious what heading to look under in the Yellow Pages for the services or products you need. In order to help you, some typical types of services and equipment commonly needed by companies which use hazardous materials and/or generate hazardous waste are summarized below. After each summary is a list of appropriate headings to look under in either
- your local Yellow Pages®, or
- the Northern California Business to Business directory
for companies which provide such services and/or equipment.
Environmental Engineers & Consultants
Environmental engineers and consultants assist with site remediation (hazardous material/waste cleanup), hazardous waste management operations, and waste reduction-oriented process modifications. These services include:
- Analysis: Site investigation and in-house laboratory work
- Cleanup: Initial site investigation and contamination removal
- Compliance: Waste stream audits, assistance with permitting procedures and forms, personnel training
- Engineering: Process modifications, installation of pollution control equipment, and scientific research

HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL CONSULTANTS
Worker Health & Safety Consultants
Worker health and safety consultants offer assistance in improving the health and safety conditions of workers, and meeting related regulatory requirements. Consultants offer testing, inspection, analysis, and employee training in areas such as hazard identification and management (asbestos, chemical and physical hazards, etc.); safety procedures and equipment use; emergency preparedness and response; first aid; disaster plans; and indoor air quality. Analytical Laboratories
To verify certification of a particular firm or to get a list of all certified labs in the state, call Cal/EPA, Dept. of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) at 510-540-2800.
Analytical labs offer a variety of services involving chemical and bacteriological testing and analysis, including (1) hazardous waste analysis, (2) groundwater and soil testing, (3) wastewater effluent analysis, and (4) process fluids analysis.
Hazardous waste generators often need to use labs to "profile" their hazardous wastes prior to contracting with a commercial waste management facility, or in order to verify that a particular industrial waste is not hazardous. Use only State-certified labs for hazardous waste profiling or for an analysis which will be used for any kind of regulatory purpose;

Safety Equipment & Supplies
Hazardous materials and waste management requires the use of various safety equipment to protect worker health and environment. Examples include temporary and permanent berms and other containment/spill control devices, protective clothing and eyewear, respiratory protection, first aid supplies, fire suppression equipment, gas detectors, alarms, safety signs and markers, and hazardous waste labels.

Chicago, ILHazardous Waste Management Service & Equipment Providers
Read Appendix F for tips on choosing responsible hazardous waste transporters and management facilities, including verifying proper state and federal authorization, registration, etc. (e.g. transporters must be registered with the State to haul hazardous wastes.)
Hazardous waste management services include hazardous waste transporters and facilities which treat, recycle, reclaim, incinerate, or otherwise "dispose" of hazardous wastes generated by other companies. Some companies provide comprehensive "route hauler" or "milk-run" services (e.g. pick up waste and replace with fresh materials) for specific industries.
You can also purchase equipment to recycle and/or treat wastes yourself (treatment requires a permit from DTSC). Be sure to use a reputable company.
